Key Considerations: Merchant Account Services In Canada And The US

General Comparison

In relation to the US, Canada has been, and continues to be, in front of the curve in using state of the art security measures in national standards for merchant account services. The use of chip and PIN technology has been used in Canada in the Interac Association for nearly twenty years, predating the formation of EMV by almost ten, while the United States is only now considering a national effort to meet EMV standards. However, the US remains a leader in mobile accessible merchant services considering the widespread use of card-reader apps for smart phones.

Interac

The Interac Association is actually a national nonprofit direct debit organization in Canada. It permits Royal Bank of Canada, CIBC, Scotiabank, Toronto-Dominion Bank, and Desjardins along with all their associated networks the opportunity to communicate and transfer financial transactions. Even though the IA applied to become a for-profit organization, that application was rejected by the Canadian Government.

The Interac Direct Payment (IDP) was launched in 1994. An instant debit service that charges no fee, it’s since that launch become very popular. Since 2004, IDP transactions have been offered in the USA. IDP processing is advantageous for United States consumers and merchants because they’re extensively accepted abroad than the traditional magnetic stripe technology that’s commonly processed domestically. The four-digit PIN associated with purchases is also less risky than the easily-forgeable signature.

Europay, Mastercard, and VISA

Europay, Mastercard, and VISA, known as EMV, is a worldwide standard for the use of smart chips in  payment cards. It began as an effort to make sure that Mastercard processing and VISA continued to be accepted everywhere. This standard uses a digital chip and four-digit PIN number similar to IDP rather than a signature and magnetic stripe as is customary in the US. Japan Credit Bureau entered the group in 2004, and American Express recently joined in 2009.

The ease of fraud by copying magnetic stripes has caused Mastercard and VISA processing to recently shift their liability, meaning merchants who use magnetic stripe technology are responsible for any fraudulent charges. Because of this many US cardholders will be declined when they attempt to charge abroad unless their card meets EMV standards. EMV debits occur at a a lot higher cost per transaction than IDP.

Services Available

Using reputable credit card processing services that use chip and PIN technology guarantees that payments will likely be approved internationally. By depending on a quality acquirer, one will discover the very best rates available and spend less. There are lots of services on the market that guarantee cutting edge security and liability coverage. It is important to investigate and take into account all of the available options.

How To Eliminate Credit Card Debt – Step by Step Tutorials

I’m applying for a student credit card for the first time?

Hi! Im 18 and I’m from Alberta. I was just wondering what are some good credit cards for me? I want a LOW limit, like $500. I want low interest rates and VERY little or no annual fee at all!

I looked at some of the credit cards at the local banks here (CIBC, TD CANADA TRUST & SCOTIABANK) But the interest rates are 18% and I want lower then that :S.

Is it better and safer to apply for a credit card at the local banks? Or is it just as safe to apply for them online, like citi financial? I hear a lot good things about this card! If anyone knows about this card, gimme some info as well on that ;) .

THANKS!!! 5 stars for the best!

if you don’t plan to carry a balance the interest rate won’t matter. try for the citi card, it’s not bad.
