Dateline NBC – Credit Card Debt Trap Part 3 of 10

I have 3 credit card balances, would it be better to pay off one completely or make overpayments to all three?

I have 3 CCs. Two of them have substantial balances, one medium. I have the cash to pay down each considerably.

So, should I 1) pay off one completely, pay down another substantially, and do nothing to the 3rd. Or
2) Pay down each but not any completely
3) Blow it on a bunch of hookers (just kidding)
Again, I was just joking about the hookers. Please give me some sound advice. Thanks!

I have 7 CC’s and this is how I’m doing it:

My normal routine is to overpay the monthly minimum, as defined by my budget. I’m making at least $10 over the monthly minimum, but if I have more cash to toss at them, I will. This is my master plan…

Pay off the lowest balances first (2 cards this month).

Next month, take the money that I would have spent on payments for the cards I just paid off and apply it to the next lowest balance.

On my 2nd payday, I’ll pay off another balance.

Lather, rinse, repeat…

One thing you may want to think about is the APR that you’re paying on each card. It’s best to pay off the highest interest card first, so you don’t keep getting hit with huge interest accruals. Then you can concentrate on paying down the lower interest cards.

It’s good for your credit score to carry a small balance on at least one of your cards. What I do is use one card for gas and small expenses. At the end of the billing cycle, I pay off most of the balance so my available credit line stays fairly large. This makes the card companies more likely to give you better interest rates and increases in your limits.

Although… the hooker idea isn’t a bad thought… hehe!

Good luck!
