1. Ownership Vs Leasing
Credit card machines are a good investment for your business and costs range from $100 to $1000. There are leases avaiable but it may cost your business more overall rather than purchasing a machine outright.
2. Backup POS Equipment
When purchasing a credit card machine, ensure that you buy a back-up battery so you can continue to do business transactions when the electricity has failed.
3. Technology
A fast modem will ensure fast transactions. This is an essential requirement with a credit card machine. Customers will appreciate the speed and convenience and so will you. You will have to pay more for a faster modem but it will all be worth it in sales.
4. Visa & Mastercard Standards
The future of credit cards is the Smart Card. They include credit, debit and other information in a microchip instead of a magnetic strip.
5. Back-up software
When purchasing a credit card machine, inquire about one with flash memory which is used to conveniently allow software downloads and installation and increases the life of the credit card equipment.
6. It’s Not all About the Credit Cards – Debit too!
Some people prefer to pay by debit instead of credit. For this reason, you will need to buy a machine that either has a built in KEY pinpad or one that has a separate PIN pad.
7. Knuckle Busters
Another great idea is to purchase an Imprinter for those times when you have to work on the road or at a show or event. At the store, if the power of telephone service fails, you will always be ready to handle a transaction and not lose business.

Hand held credit card swipe machine, please help! UK only please!?
I need to be able to start accepting credit cards at craft fairs but I do not yet have a merchant account, I understand these are difficult to obtain if your business is not up and running (but how do you get it up and running without one!!). Is it possible to use a manual swipe machine and if so do you need a merchant account still or can these be processed via paypal? I’d appreciate any helpful answers! Any other ideas would be great. Thank you.
Try Worldpay or Metacharge, they will take u on as you begin your biz, they have average charges of 4% plus 30p per transaction and a monthly fee around £30, it’s all in one, they process the cards and have a built in gateway, no seperate merchant acc needed. Then u can transfer the funds to any bank.
