Closing a bank credit card account how long?

Can some one who is working at a bank or credit card company or has had a job there. This is the year 2011 most every thing in banking is done electronically I just got off the phone with the BANK they told me after they receive my request in writing (I understand why the bank whats it in written form) it will take six to eight weeks to issue a check to me with my balance plus interest due to me. Why so long?

They want to make sure all credits and debits are posted to your account (which will take until the next billing cycle). After that, they will wait until the bill is run (usually about 5 days after the closing of the cycle), the request will go to the accountancy department where it has to be entered onto the books, probably some paperwork cut and a check issued.
